Bigleaf Hydrangeas

Bigleaf Hydrangeas

Botanical name: Hydrangea macrophylla

Bloom type: Perennial, Shrub

Known as the most common garden hydrangea shrub. They bloom during the summer and fall and can attract butterflies. This plant produces large, dense pompom-type flower clusters. Based on the pH of soil the shrub will produce different color flowers. For example, their blooms are dark blue in an acidic soil. As the soil becomes neutral, their flowers will turn pinker. Mophead hydrangeas are hardy in zones 6 through 9.
